Goal

After the 2023 quake, Malek and Sereen rebuilt a family’s unsafe mud-and-stone home on their land with cement and brick, creating a stronger and safer house built to last.

Description

After the devastating 2023 earthquake in the Al Haouz region, Malek and Sereen saw firsthand how fragile many mountain homes were. Entire families were left without shelter, as traditional houses made of mud and stone crumbled under the force of the tremors. Among them was a family whose home suffered severe internal damage — the walls cracked, ceilings collapsed, and living inside became too dangerous.

Determined to act quickly, Malek and Sereen stepped in to support the rebuilding of a new home on the same land. Constructed with cement and brick, the new house was designed to be stronger, safer, and earthquake-resistant, while preserving the traditional layout and warmth that reflect the family’s heritage. Local builders were employed for the construction, ensuring that both skills and income stayed within the community.

Impact

  • 1 family safely rehoused, providing a durable and dignified living space after total loss.

  • Local employment created, with construction carried out by skilled masons and workers from nearby villages.

  • Demonstrated model for safer rural housing, showing how modern materials can coexist with traditional architecture.

  • Strengthened community resilience, inspiring neighbors to explore similar reconstruction methods.

  • Long-term security restored, giving the family peace of mind and stability to rebuild their lives.

This project became a symbol of renewal and solidarity — proof that even in the aftermath of tragedy, small, focused actions can rebuild not just homes, but hope itself.
